NEW REAL MADRID SHIRT 2010/2011 - Official release on June 2

Here you have the new Real Madrid shirt for 2010/2011. I had thought that having signed up to the official Real Madrid newsletter recently, that I'd be one of the first to receive pictures of the shirt. Not to be. Bizarrely, the shirt is already available in South Africa (reasons on a postcard?) and Marca has jumped the gun by publishing the picture below on their website this afternoon. Quite like it. It's not as awesome as the new Atletico Madrid away shirt, but it's not a bad effort from Adidas. The lines that radiate out from the badge is a nice touch. Also fits in nicely with the clubs idea that Real Madrid is the centre of the universe. As soon as some decent photos of the shirt are released, I'll replace the shoddy effort below. And be sure to catch the Real Madrid v AC Milan legends match at the Bernabeu tonight. Zidane, Cafu, Maldini, Butragueño, Costacurta, Weah, McManaman and many more classic blasts from the past will be involved. 7pm kick off (CET).

Saudi Arabia give Spain a rough ride in Austria (Highlights)

Spain had to rely on a last gasp Fernando Llorente header to edge past a battling Saudi Arabi in Innsbruck, with a lethargic performance that will have Del Bosque a little worried less than two weeks before South Africa 2010 begins. Better they get games like this out of their system before the World Cup, as performances like this could be fatal in the latter stages of a tournament. Although thats exactly what these friendlies are for. Blow away the post-season cobwebs and get into stride before the serious business begins. 

There were a few worrying signs in defense, not least a glaring error from Iker Casillas for Saudi Arabias opener which will undoubtedly open a pointless Casillas v Valdes debate, whilst Spains midfield was uncharacteristically careless in possession. Only Xavi and Iniesta looking capable of cracking open a stubborn Saudi backline and it was the returning Andres Iniesta, showing no signs of rustiness, who turned inside and sent over an inch-perfect cross for his new Barca teammate David Villa to nod Spain level. 'El Guaje' is now only seven behind Rauls record of 44 international goals for 'La Roja'.

Xabi Alonso struck a trademark goal from outside the box on the hour to put Spain infront, before Saudi Arabia sprung another surprise to pull themselves level; a well.worked move leading to Al Numares' shot which took a slight deflection leaving Casillas helplessly wrong-footed. Vicente del Bosque rung the changes, handing debuts to Pedro and Javi Martinez in the process, before Athletic Bilbao striker Fernando Llorente, who had looked dangerous alongside fellow substitute Jesus Navas, headed in a late corner to hand Spain victory. The bigman will be vital in the World Cup, offering a solid alternative to Villa and Torres if things aren't running smoothly upfront. Another positive to have come out of this match, is that it's shown once more that this Spain side has winning firmly fixed in their DNA. Next up South Korea.

JOSE MOURINHO NEW REAL MADRID MANAGER - Florentino pays €8 mill to Inter

Today it was confirmed that Jose Mourinho will be the new Real Madrid manager next season as Florentino Perez finally reached an agreement with Inter Milan president Massimo Moratti. Inter Milan had been holding out for 16 big ones, but with Florentino flying out to Milan to sort the deal out personally, it appears they agreed upon meeting halfway. Mourinho will be presented to the fans on Monday at 1pm, and whilst Real Madrid want to hold a Cristiano-style media fanfare in the Bernabeu, 'Mou' is understood to want a quieter entrance. He has a four year contract at €10 million a year, but as his time at Inter proved, if Madrid manage to win their tenth Champions League before, he will be on his bike to his spiritual home in England. The only shame I see in this whole affair is that it has unfairly taken all the limelight from Inter during their finest hour. They've achieved the triple and all the footballing world been talking about is Jose Mourinho. The guy is proper box office.

So it's official. We will have the Mourinho-Guardiola battle we all longed for. Next season will be brutal!

REAL MADRID SACK MANUEL PELLEGRINI - Chilean put out of his misery

The worst kept secret in Spanish Football was confirmed today as Real Madrid manager Manuel Pellegrini was sacked by Florentino Perez. As the club lined up Jose Mourinho to take the reins, Pellegrini had been on the Bernabeus version of death row. He knew his fate was sealed, it was simply a matter of when. Just as winning the league wasn't good enough for Fabio Capello to keep his job, a record Liga points haul and over 100 goals wasn't enough for Pellegrini, who becomes Florentinos sixth managerial victim. They played some exceptional football at times, but ultimately the Chileans time at the Bernabeu will be judged by two disastrous cup exits at the hands of Alcorcón and Lyon and a fruitless bid to unsettle Barcelona as La Liga champions.

He was consistently hindered by a lack of support from the clubs hierarchy and press, with only the fans ever seriously backing their manager. The stage is now set for the Mourinho show to waltz into town in his attempt to be the first ever manager to win league titles in The Premiership, Serie A and La Liga. Just the small matter of around €16million compensation for Inter Milan to sort out first. Small change for Florentino.

They never cease to amaze me, but just take a look at the disgusting show of disrespect from the Real Madrid rag Marca. The Real Madrid news section and no mention of Pellegrini. It's as if he never existed. A bad nightmare.

SPAIN WORLD CUP SQUAD PHOTO - Future World Cup Winners in the making?

Here you have the Spain squad photo, taken in Las Rozas this morning. The lucky 23 men that are going to be representing 'La Roja' in the 2010 World Cup next month will be training in Madrid until May 28th when they travel to Innsbruck in Austria for a friendly against Saudi Arabia the next day (18.00 CET). They then move onto Schruns (Austria) where they will play against South Korea on 3rd June, after which the squad will fly back to Spain to prepare for the final warm-up match against Poland on 8th June (22.00 CET) in Murcia. Three friendly matches to negotiate before their flight out to South Africa on 10th June. Anyone think thats one too many? Or are they against such easy opposition that it just don't matter?! I have no doubts the matches will prove useful run-outs, but the squad have got enough injury worries to contend with as it is. And thats a fair amount of traveling for two weeks. Del Bosque and the whole country will be keeping those fingers crossed they all get to the NWU Campus (Potchefstroom) in one piece.

LA LIGA GOALS OF THE YEAR 2010 - Leo Messi, CR9 or Javi Martinez?

They dont really seem to do 'Goal of the Year' in La Liga, and if they do I sure can't find it, so to buck the trend I've gone for a few goals that would be in with a shout. A heavenly dribble and shot from Leo Messi, an audacious piece of skill from Javi Martinez against Almeria and a bullet from Cristiano Ronaldo against Villarreal. Bit of everything in those goals. JOSE MOURINHO SET TO JOIN REAL MADRID - 'Mou' departs from Inter Milan after historic treble

I know we've got the World Cup just around the corner, but who is now dying for the new Liga season to fire up? Jose Mourinho is all set to take over the hotseat at Real Madrid with a juicy three year contract on the table allowing the 'special one' to rake in a cool €10million a year. Never a man to pussyfoot around an issue, 'Mou' (as he is affectionately known in these parts) confirmed his departure from Italy with a parting shot at the treatment received during his two year tenure in Milan. 'I'm leaving Inter. I'm fed up of Italy'. And what a way to go, sealing Inter Milans first European Cup/Champions League since 1965 when they sneaked past Benfica 1-0 at the San Siro, thanks to two goals from ex-Real Zaragoza man Diego Milito.

How apt that he should do so in the Santiago Bernabeu. By all accounts Mourinho just needs to be convinced about the project on offer under Florentino Perez but if he likes what he sees, it's a done deal. Can you imagine the fireworks next season? Mourinhos Madrid v Guardiolas Barca. A journalists dream. Although it will only serve to widen an already gaping gap between the big two and the rest. But why should Real Madrid care about that? Mourinho will offer the club exactly what they lacked. A focus point or shield for the players from the press. The Portuguese coach is a master in the art of creating controversy to lift any pressure off his team. Who was talking about Diego Milito, Eto'o or Sneijder before tonights final? No-one. We were all talking about José Mário dos Santos Félix Mourinho.

NEW BARCELONA SHIRT 2010/2011 - David Villa presented to Camp Nou

What do you make of the new Barcelona shirt for 2010/2011? Not too fond of it at the moment but the last one took a while to convince me. It's the yellow trim that puts me off. Today was also the day David Villa was presented to his new fans. 'I will contribute my bit towards making Barcelona even better than what they are now'. Personally I can't see how he won't. All Barca lacked this season, if they lacked anything, was an out and out goalscorer. Yes, Messi scored 47 goals, but perhaps a few of you will understand what I'm trying to say. Someone to take the weight off Leo when the little genius has a rare off day. Perfect example: Inter Milan. Couple of questions. Is this the end for Ibrahimovic? Will Barcelona be just that little bit more unstoppable next season? I would just LOVE to hear your opinions.

SPAIN WORLD CUP SQUAD 2010 - Victor Valdes and Pedro are in

This afternoon Vicente Del Bosque, as unflappable and stoney-faced as ever, sauntered out into the press room and rattled off his Spain squad for the World Cup in South Africa. 'There you have the best 23 available' he assured the reporters. When quizzed about those players left out he replied 'It is always best to decide with your head, but sometimes you can't help but be influenced by your heart'. It sure can't be easy. The unfortunate souls sacrificed from the pre-squad were David De Gea, Diego Lopez, Cesar Azpilicueta, Marcos Senna, Santi Cazorla, Dani Güiza and Alvaro Negredo. Interestingly, the inclusions of Pedro and Victor Valdes are being labelled a 'surprise' in the press. After the seasons they've had I see their inclusions as obligatory. Perhaps the one big curveball thrown in by Vicente, it was the inclusion of Bilbao midfielder Javi Martinez. A reward for his sensational season at the San Mames. Put simply, all the 'Mister' has done is what any Spanish fan would want him to do. Choose his squad on current form and not past glory. An all too common sin among national coaches. 

It was this selection policy that inevitably put pay to the hopes of Cazorla, Negredo, Senna and Güiza. This season they've either been out with injury or out of form. Diego Lopez wasn't helped by the wealth of goalkeeping quality on offer. Just take a look at yesterdays hero, Andres Palop. Not even considered within the top 4 keepers. Oh what Fabio Capello would do for a Palop. Or a Diego Lopez or a De Gea. The Atletico shotstopper and Azpilicueta need not fear. Their time will come. If the manager has taken any risks, it was by including a whole host of unfit players, not that he had much choice. Fernando Torres and Cesc Fabregas are still to make returns from injury, whilst Andres Iniesta and Xavi are by no means firing on all cylinders. Any serious injury to that quartet of stars could be critical. Would Spain still be favourites without Xavi knitting things together in the middle? Or deprived of the presence of Torres upfront? Whatever happens before kick-off on 16th June, 23 of Spains finest will travel down to South Africa with the hopes of a nation and the expectations of the footballing world on their shoulders. After winning Euro 2008 it comes with the territory. The fun starts now.

SEVILLA COPA DEL REY WINNERS 2010: Cup final to savour!

All the talk before the final was about who wanted it the most. Who was dreaming more about winning the final. Even now I think it's impossible to say. Diego Capel and Jesus Navas scored the goals that ensured the Copa del Rey would be travelling down to Sevilla. Atletico Madrid were cruelly denied the chance to lift their second trophy in a week but the players and fans can take pride in the part they played in what was a memorable cup final. 50,000 Atleti fans made the trip up to the Camp Nou and their vocal support was nothing short of relentless. Win or lose, they were there to rejoice in a historic week for the red and white half of Madrid. Those who watched will never forget those cries of 'ATLETI' when the final whistle was blown. Who's to know if it was the emptyness of defeat or the display of affection from their adoring supporters that provoked tears from many of the Atleti squad. They certainly had nothing to be ashamed of. Both in victory and defeat, this Atletico team will come back bigger and stronger next season.

However well Atletico played, they came across a Sevilla team on a mission. A mission that started on 28th August 2007; the fateful day unfortunate Antonio Puerta left his team a man down. Ever since, his old teammates have strived to lift a trophy in his honour. If it wasn't to be against AC Milan in the European Supercup just three days after, they were not going to be denied tonight. How apt it should be that the man wearing his old number 16 shirt, Diego Capel, should set them on their way after only 5 minutes on the clock. Andres Palop, the man who singlehandedly kept out a rampant Barcelona in the earlier rounds, was equal to everything Atleti fired his way. Didier Zokora was everywhere. I've never seen a man run so much in 90 minutes. Atletico Madrid had the possession and the chances, but Sevilla had a little helping hand from above. In added time Jesus Navas sped away from Dominguez, rounded De Gea and netted to seal the win, sending the 35,000 Sevillanos into raptures. The celebrations yielded a number of 'sombrero' hats, immortilizing the peculiar dress sense of their hugely unlikeable president Jose Maria Del Nido. Palop raised the oversized trophy and their mission was complete. A cup final to remember.

BARCELONA: David Villa joins for €40million from Valencia

It's official. For the next four seasons at least, David Villa will be a Barcelona player after signing from Valencia for €40million. Pep Guardiola and Joan Laporta have moved swiftly to ensure that Barca will have the most feared frontline in football once the 2010/2011 season kicks off. Not even Florentino will be able to match that this summer. Taking into account Titi Henrys probable exit, Villa joins Lionel Messi, Zlatan Ibrahimovic, Bojan and Pedro in a mouthwatering array of striking riches. How will Pep fit them all into his plans? With Pedro a nailed-on starter, young Bojan looks set for another year of benchwarming, while big Zlatan must be fearing for his on/off place in the team after a largely uninspiring debut season. But Pep's got a whole summer to ponder that one over. My one worry about Villa? His age. Has he already peaked? Fingers crossed the best is still to come. Tomorrow the Spanish number '7' will undergo the medical before being unveiled before the fans in the Camp Nou on friday afternoon. Next on the list: Cesc Fabregas.

Now that the season has drawn to a close, it's time to churn out a few interesting LA LIGA STATISTICS from 2009/2010. Barcelona sealed their second consecutive league triumph, crowning themselves La Liga Champions 2010 with a comfortable four goal win over relegated Real Valladolid. After overcoming a nervy start in which Victor Valdes, who wins the seasons Zamora trophy, almost gifted Manucho the opening goal, Pedro and Leo Messi guided Barca to the title with a customary exhibition of attacking football and lethal finishing. Barcelona relied on a own goal from Luis Prieto to calm the nerves, but once Pedro slotted in the second the Camp Nou transformed into a 98,000 strong party. News had filtered through about Dudas goal for Malaga against Real Madrid but with further goals from Pichichi and Golden Boot winner Lionel Messi, the match in Andalucia was ultimately irrelevant. The Argentine capped another riproaring season with his 33rd and 34th league goals, which took his total for the season in all competitions to a remarkable 47 strikes, equalling the record for Barcelona set by a certain Ronaldo Luis Nazario de Lima in 1996/1997. The final whistle confirmed Real Valladolids descent into La Segunda and sent thousands of euforic Barca fans on a familiar journey to Plaza Catalunya to revel what has been another dominant season in Spain. During the post-match celebrations on the pitch the players donned shirts which read 'Don't think about one season, think about history'. The Pep dream team have just written another chapter in Barcelonas.

Malaga 1 - 1 Real Madrid

Real Madrid were unable to conjure up a win that would have given them a slim chance of snatching the title from Barcelona at the death as Malaga grabbed a crucial point which confirmed their top flight survival. In the end todays result in the Rosaleda was inconsequential with regard to the title given Barcas rout of Valladolid. Portuguese winger Duda scored the goal that kept Malaga in the top flight, controlling Caicedos audacious backheel to scuff a shot past Iker Casillas. From then on it was all about Malaga keeper Gustavo Munua who kept a increasingly disheartened Real Madrid at bay. Not even goalmachines Cristiano Ronaldo and Higuain were able to sign the season off with a winning goal, with Madrid having to be content with a point earned through Rafeal Van der Vaarts neat equaliser. After an outlay of close to €270 million last summer, Florentino Perez will not be impressed by his empty trophy cabinet, although in defence of doomed manager Manuel Pellegrini, Real Madrid have beaten their record for league points and wins. Not his fault Madrid are competing against the finest team of our generation, but his future at the Bernabeu appears to be at an end. Expect uncle Florentino to dispose of the Chilean and open the biggest chequebook in world football once more.

Valencia 1 - 0 Tenerife

Even though Valencia were playing for pride they completely outclassed a surprisingly tame Tenerife to send Ruben Barajas off on a high and their visitors down to the second division. Only a series of stops from Tenerife keeper Sergio Aragoneses prevented Valencia from scoring five or six and all this without David Villa and David Silva who were prevented from lighting up the Mestalla for possibly the last time. Centre-back Alexis got the goal in added time, as Tenerife were left to rue a passionless performance which cost them their Liga status.

Osasuna 1 - 1 Xerez

It wasn't to be for Nestor Gorosito and his Xerez side as they came up short against Osasuna in Pamplona. Los Azulinos depended on other results and while Real Valladolid and Tenerife both lost, the draw for Malaga would have sent them down even if they had found that elusive second goal. Cheered on by over 1000 away fans, Xerez were all over Osasuna, yet fell behind to Dadys strike just after half-time. But just as they've done on what has been a heroic second half to the season, the Jerezanos fought back into the match through sub Antoñitos long range effort. Xerez drop back down into La Segunda in their inaugural season in the first division, although their fans and everyone connected to the club can be immensely proud of the pure effort and determination shown over the last few months. If Gorosito stays on, expect the Andalucians to mount a serious challenge to jump straight back up.

Racing Santander 2 - 0 Sporting Gijon

There was only going to be one winner here, as Sporting Gijon sent out a team full of reserves and youth teamers which couldnt cope with a Racing team playing to keep themselves in La Liga. Burundi striker Mohamed Tchite got both the goals which kept Santander up, one a clinical header and the other a tidy finish inside the six yard box. Miguel Portugal will be relieved to have maintained Racing in the first division but the Sardinero let their feelings be known regarding what has been a shocking season. Time to clear out the dead wood and start afresh.

La Liga Showdown: A weekend to stand up and be counted

Now the Atletico Madrid fans have left Neptune in peace, at least for a few days, it's time for the Liga showdown. Nothing has been decided at either end of the table with the Liga trophy, qualification for Europe and survival all up for grabs. It promises to be a frenetic finale to a memorable season. Whatever Zinedine Zidane and Manuel Pellegrini spout in the press, there will only be one league winner this season and you will be hard pushed to find a betting man laying any serious cash on Real Madrid. Frankly I'm surprised there have been no gushing declarations from CR9 predicting a glorious end to his first year in Spain. Even Sergio 'We'll win 3-0' Ramos seems resigned to finishing second. Barcelona have the simple task of needing a win against relegation-threatened Real Valladolid at home. I'll give that one an odds on. On saturday Sevilla and Mallorca will be hoping to claim the final Champions League position while Getafe and Villarreal will fight it out for 6th place and qualification for next years Europa League.

The fun and games at either end of the table then fire up on Sunday evening. Five teams no less will be scrapping for their lives as the relegation trapdoor prepares to lock shut. I can't remember a relegation D-day quite like it, since 1983 by all accounts. Safe to say some have got it easier than others. Real Madrid and Barcelona aren't quite the teams you would choose to face in these circumstances, so you have to feel a little sorry for poor old Malaga and Valladolid, who let's face it look doomed. Tenerife face a tough trip to the Mestalla, Racing host Sporting Gijon, while everyones second favourite team, Xerez, travel up to Pamplona to lock horns with Osasuna. Whatever happens there'll be some tears, some celebrations and we'll move on to the cup final before everyone settles down for the World Cup. I bloody love World Cup summers. Enjoy the weekend. 

ATLETICO MADRID WIN EUROPA LEAGUE: Diego Forlan the two goal hero!

Atletico Madrid 2 - 1 Fulham

(1-0) 31' Forlan, (1-1) 38' Davies, (2-1) 116' Forlan

Atletico Madrid ended 48 years of hurt to land the Europa League in Hamburg, defeating English side Fulham 2-1. Diego Forlan was the two goal hero, striking the first of the match after 30 minutes and leaving it late to grab the winner, just four minutes from the end of extra time. The Uruguayan has saved his best for Europe this season, with the English bearing the brunt of his razor-sharp finishing. Call it revenge after his barren spell at Manchester United, but the hitman has scored crucial goals against Liverpool and Fulham, almost single-handedly driving Atleti to Euro glory. But this was no one-man-show. Forlan was aided by an electric performance from Sergio Agüero and solid displays from youngsters Dominguez and David de Gea, as Atleti overcame a resolute Fulham side to snatch the trophy just as the dreaded penalty shootout was approaching. 

You have to take your proverbial hat off to Fulham, who have been nothing short of an absolute revelation in this tournament. Mohamed Al Fayeds team refuse to back down from a fight, taking little time to claw themselves back into the final with an equaliser through Welshman Simon Davies. Zoltan Gera and Dickson Etuhu put in admirable shifts, but they were hampered early in the second half as their menacing focal point, Bobby Zamora, was forced off injured, leaving them glaringly short of presence up front. Atletico carried the greater threat throughout, especially when 'El Kun' grabbed hold of the ball. The Argentine was a constant menace for Brede Hangeland and Aaron Hughes, and it was their failure to deal with his incisive runs that ultimately cost them. It was desparately sad for the neutral to see Roy Hodgson and his unfancied team of veterans fall at the last hurdle, but Fulham more than contributed to what was a hotly contested final, dominated by two imposing defences. They simply lacked the class and ruthlessness of Agüero and Forlan.

There have been some miserable moments down the years for Atleti; a perpetual suffering as the club hurdled crisis after crisis. Yet it makes moments like this even sweeter. The Neptune Fountain finally got the celebration it's been lacking since 1962. The man who has turned it all around at the Vicente Calderon, Quique Sanches Florez, was flung in the air by his ecstatic players in the frenzied celebrations after Antonio Lopez lifted the trophy; a clear sign of their admiration for the former Valencia coach. The job Quique has done since he arrived early  this season to replace Abel Resino simply cannot be underestimated. Back on October 23rd he entered into an undignified mess. Seven months later they have the Europa League in the cabinet and a Copa del Rey final to look forward to in one weeks time. He has etched himself a place in Atleti folklore.

So a massive congratulations to Atletico Madrid and all their fiercely loyal supporters, who have waited almost half a century for another taste of European silverware. On to the Camp Nou for Round two.

Atletico Madrid v Fulham: Europa League Final Preview

Tonight, 24 years later, Atletico Madrid will once again fight for their second European title as they take on Roy Hodgsons Fulham in Hamburg. Some posers as we preview the match: Will we see the same Perea that lead the defensive line so admirably against Liverpool? Can Sergio Agüero and Diego Forlan fire Atleti to glory? Will Atletis defence cope with the under-rated front four of Bobby Zamora, Damien Duff, Zoltan Gera and Simon Davies? One thing that Atletico simply cannot do is underestimate this Fulham team; a team few in the Atleti squad had probably heard of when the first ball was kicked in this seasons Europa League. 

Fulham have contrived to knock out the favourites (Juventus), the holders (Shaktar Donetsk) and the team whose ground will host the final (Hamburg). It would appear destiny is on the side of the Londoners but that will count for nothing as the two sides lock horns in little under two hours time. Perea will need to be prepared for physical battle with Bobby Zamora. The Atleti full-backs, most likely Ujfalusi and Antonio Lopez, cannot lose concentration for one moment against the pace and trickery of Duff and Davies. Assuncao will need to follow Danny Murphys every move; the creative force behind Hodgsons team. Then they can let the class and firepower of Agüero and Forlan to shoot them to glory. It promises to be electric, with the two teams desparate to make their mark on the inaugural Europa League final. To all Atletico fans, especially the guys over at MadridAtleticos: The best of luck.

La Liga relegation battle reaches dramatic climax: Three of five to go down

The battle for the title might be a two-way affair, but the all-out scrap for survival has gifted us a no holds barred fist-fight between five clubs who will be holding no punches come 7pm on Sunday evening. Racing Santander, Real Valladolid, Tenerife, Malaga and even Xerez enter the final matchday with  a real chance of starting next year in La Liga, but an equally real possibility of falling out the top flight. Three clubs will descend into 'hell', whilst two will celebrate a last-gasp escape from the jaws of La Segunda. What complicates matters a little more is than in Spain, a tie on points isn't decided by goal difference, but by the points earned in the games played against each other.

Currently Real Valladolid and Racing Santander are out of the relegation zone because in all the league games played between them, Tenerife and Malaga (imagine it as a mini-league), Valladolid and Racing have earned 8 points, with the rest all on 7. (Ignore my league table on the right, it's conveniently wrong). Then goal difference within that mini-league is taken into account and if the teams are still tied, on goal difference in the league overall. The final tiebreaker is the Fair Play League. Here is a slightly complicated look at what each team needs to do to stay up:

Real Valladolid (v Barcelona AWAY): If they win they are practically saved. In the case of a draw, they are down if two out of Malaga, Tenerife and Racing win. Lose and they need Xerez not to win and Racing, Tenerife and/or Malaga to lose.

Verdict: You're going down!

Malaga (v Real Madrid HOME): If they win they need one of Racing o Valladolid not to. In the event of a draw they need two out of Racing, Valladolid and Tenerife to lose OR for Valladolid to lose and Racing and Tenerife to draw. If they lose they will fall into La Segunda.

Verdict: You're going down!

Racing Santander (v Sporting Gijon HOME): If Racing win, they need two out of Valladolid, Malaga and Tenerife to not win. A draw and they need two out of Valladolid, Tenerife and Malaga to draw/lose. If Racing fall to defeat they need two of the rest to lose with even a Xerez victory not enough to relegate them.

Verdict: Lucky escape! (Rumour has it a dirty boardroom deal has already been struck with Sporting)

Tenerife (v Valencia AWAY): If they Tenerife win, they need both Malaga and Valladolid not to do so. To survive in the event of a draw they need two out of Malaga, Valladolid or Racing to lose. Lose and they drop down, regardless of what Xerez do.

Verdict: You're going down!

Xerez (v Osasuna AWAY): A modern day footballing miracle if they manage it. If Xerez beat Osasuna they need Malaga, Valladolid and one from Tenerife and Racing all to lose. If they don't win, they're down. Simple as.

Verdict: Miracle escape!

Spain World Cup pre-squad announced by Vicente del Bosque

Today Vicente del Bosque announced his Spain pre-squad of thirty for the World Cup in South Africa and it included a few little surprises. David de Gea and Victor Valdes were named among the five keepers, with Cesar Azpilicueta of Osasuna, Javi Martinez of Athletic Bilbao and Pedro of Barcelona named among the outfield players. Del Bosque has done well up to now, although the tough task will come on the 1st of June, when he will be required to chop seven names from the list. Two of those names will inevitably be goalkeepers, with Diego Lopez, Victor Valdes and David de Gea all battling it out for the third goalkeeping spot. Although Valdes would be equally worthy of a spot, my money is on De Gea to make it. The experience will be invaluable for a young man who many expect to take up Iker Casillas' mantel once the Real Madrid shotstopper calls it a day. Elsewhere, barring any injuries, the battle for positions are likely to be between:

Marchena v Azpilicueta (I'd take Azpilicueta, Spain are more than covered at centre-back and Marchena has never impressed me), Sergio Busquets v Javi Martinez (my vote goes to Martinez) and then a mammoth four-way battle between Alvaro Negredo, Santi Cazorla, Pedro and Dani Güiza for the final striking position. After a shocking debut season for Negredo at Sevilla, a year plagued with injury for Cazorla and with Güiza hardly setting the world alight over in Turkey, Pedro surely deserves his chance after another rampaging season for Barca. It all depends on whether Del Bosque goes for tried and trusted or up and coming talent waiting for their moment to break onto the world stage...a la Rooney-Euro 2004.

Barcelona took a giant step towards La Liga title with a vital win which ended up being far too tight for Guardiolas liking. Having stormed into a three goal lead courtesy of goals from the boys from the cantera, Messi, Bojan and Pedro (who simply has to go to the World Cup), and with Sevilla down to ten following Konkos sending off, it looked for all the money in the world that Barca were firmly on course to the all important three points that would see them extinguish any hopes Real Madrid had of a favour from Sevilla. But two quickfire goals from Kanoute and Luis Fabiano, thanks to some quick thinking from Zokora at a free-kick, sparked the match back to life and revived hopes over at the Bernabeu. 

There were some nervous moments, but Barca held out during a nailbiting last twenty minutes to place one hand on the La Liga trophy. They will surely complete the formalities against Real Valladolid next weekend, but it's not over until it's over and Real Madrid will not be giving an inch. 99 points is what it will take and I can't see any other eventuality.

Real Madrid 5 - 1 Athletic Bilbao

It's funny how Barcelona always storm into early leads before complicating matters, whereas Real Madrid need to suffer before blowing their opponents away. Tonights match against Atheltic Bilbao followed a similar path to that at the Ono Estadi three days earlier. Poor first half showing before ratching it up a notch and providing an avalanche of late goals. After Cristiano Ronaldos penalty, which produced a ridiculous red card for Amoribieta, Fran Yestes superb winding run and shot sent the teams in on level terms. With Barca two up down in Sevilla, it looked all over for Madrid. When Sevilla brought it back to 2-3, the crowd raised the roof and their team responded. Three goals in four minutes saw Real Madrid put the game beyond doubt before Marcelo finished it off with the fifth. But there were to be no more favours from Sevilla as Real Madrid signed off their impeccable home season with muted celebrations. It was also a sad ending for Guti who produced a classy display in what will probably be his last ever match at the Bernabeu. All that remains for Madrid is to win at Malaga and hope Javier Clemente pulls a miracle out of the bag at the Camp Nou.

Villarreal 2 - 0 Valencia

What a turnaround Juan Carlos Garrido has completed at Villarreal since he took over. It seems a long time ago when Villarreal were flirting with the relegation zone but with this victory, thanks to early strikes from Rossi and Joseba Llorente, Villarreal find themselves with a very real chance of qualifying for the Europa League. With third place already guaranteed, Unai Emery rotated his team leaving out Villa, Mata and David Silva. Those that came in contributed to a tame, heartless Valencia performance, typical of a team that was playing only for pride.

Deportivo La Coruña 1 - 0 Mallorca

(1-0) 68' Riki

Mallorca missed a great chance to leapfrog Sevilla in their fight for the only remaining Champions League place as they fell to defeat at the hands of Deportivo. Aritz Aduriz was left to rue a flood of chances during the first half as his team were downed by a clinical finish from in-form Deportivo striker Riki. It was Depors first win in twelve as the match was also marked by the return to the field of play by Brazilian full-back Filipe Luis, four months after his horror ankle break against Athletic Bilbao. Fantastic to see him back so soon.

Xerez 3 - 2 Real Zaragoza

(1-0) 22' Francis, (1-1) 66' Herrera, (2-1) 68' Michel, (3-1) 74' Calvo, (3-2) 76' Gabi

Whatever happens next weekend, the mere fact that Xerez are still not mathematically relegated is enough to make any Xerez fan burst with pride. Nestor Gorosito is a hero in these parts having racked up 26 points in a stunning second half to the season, everyone is asking themselves: What if Ziganda had been booted out before? Shame is he wasn't, and it looks like a horrendous first half to the season will relegate the plucky Jerezanos. Real Zaragoza never looked flustered in a game full of chances, as even a defeat could have seen them mathematically assured of survival. And thats how it turned out. Xerez need to win at Osasuna and hope results go their way elsewhere. An unlikely scenario but football produces miracles year in and year out. And if anyone is capable of pulling one out in Pamplona, it's GOROSITO GOROSITO!

Tenerife 2 - 2 Almeria

(1-0) 14' Bertran, (1-1) 17' Piatti, (1-2) 80' Crusat, (2-2) 93' Nino

If Tenerife stay in La Liga, Nino is the man that will have saved them. 14 goals from dimunitive frontman have been instrumental in their fight to stay in the top flight. Had Oltras men won tonight, Tenerife would have taken a huge step towards saving themselves from the drop. Goals from Piatti and Crusat obliged Nino to draw his team level with the last kick of the match, leaving 'Los Tinerfeños' tied on 36 points along with Racing Santander, Malaga and Real Valladolid. It's going to be one hell of a final day and Tenerife will have to hope Unai Emery puts out a similar side to that against Villarreal tonight.

Real Vallodolid 2 - 1 Racing Santander

Nerves affected what a match with little football but bucketfuls of emotion. Real Valladolid simply had to win tonight, and they did so coming from behind after Christians opener. Diego Costa earned the penalty with just over ten minutes left, that was cooly converted by Nauzet. Even so, Racing Santander still have it easier than todays opponents as they enter the final day of the season. Valladolid travel to the Camp Nou to play a a Barca side playing for the title while Racing will entertain Sporting Gijon who will be playing for little more than pride. I know who my money is on.

Getafe 2 - 1 Malaga

(1-0) 26' Soldado, (2-0) 56' Pedro Leon, (2-1) 90' Fernando

Malaga host Real Madrid in their last game of a season that requires them to beat Cristiano and company to stand any chance of staying up. Tonight they were defeated by a Getafe side who now depend on themselves to secure a spot in next years Europa League. Another goal for Roberto Soldado, who has enjoyed a crackig season when fit, and a corker from Pedro Leon were enough to sink the visitors and leave them only needing a win against Atletico next week to seal European football for 2010/2011. What a job Michel has done at the Coliseum.

La Liga: Real Madrid and Barcelona streets ahead of the rest

The first team to ever break the 90 point mark in Spanish football was the Real Madrid side of Fabio Capello in 1996/1997. This season Barcelona and Real Madrid have both stormed above the landmark with two matches still to play. Some regard it as an astonishing feat, underlining the supreme quality on offer at the two largest clubs on the Iberian peninsula. In many respects they're correct. One quick look at Messi, CR9 and company would confirm that. Others, me included, see it as a sobering judgement on the standard on offer below. Valencia lie third; an incredible 24 points behind Real Madrid, with a side that can count on David Villa, David Silva and Juan Mata; all established Spanish internationals. With David Villa set to leave, direction Barca, this chasm is only going to widen. The other teams remotely capable of launching an assault on this duopoly in the past few seasons, Sevilla and Villarreal, have fallen by the wayside after some promising years of growth. The problem, if it can be classed as such, is not going to vanish any time soon.

Perhaps its Atletico Madrids time to make the leap from mid-table obscurity to title challengers. For that to happen it is of tantamount importance that they hold onto Sergio Agüero and Diego Forlán. But with vultures circling overhead, their beaks stuffed with cash, it's a tough ask. Below this 'second tier' there is very little chance of anyone troubling Barca or Real Madrid over ninety minutes, let alone a season. During my time at Xerez I've been impressed by teams like Almeria and Osasuna, but to compete they rely on 'rejects' and home-grown talent that will be shipped on if they're any good. Mallorca and Athletic Bilbao have enjoyed superb seasons, but you doubt whether they'll be able to maintain this form over the course of three or four seasons. It pains me to say it, but the two have overachieved, especially those at the Ono Estadi. That's not to take away from what has been an outstanding season for Gregorio Manzano and his team, it's just I can't see them repeating it next year. I hope they prove me wrong.

Marca reported some interesting stats from across Europe when discussing the matter. How Bayern Munich are on course to win the Bundesliga with 67 points (33 matches). That Inter Milan odds on to win Serie A with 76 points (36 matches). Precisely the two teams preparing to battle it out for Europes biggest prize at the Bernabeu this month. Two leagues many derise as lacking in any serious quality. Surely not the case judging by those stats. In 1999/2000, Deportivo La Coruña stole the title with a measly 69 points. If Barcelona win their remaining two matches, they'll do so with 30 points more on the board. Something rather dramatic has happened in the last decade. A shift of wealth.

You only need to look across at the Premier League to see how this season, a wider spread of available funds (several clubs with tens of millions to spend, not just two) has led to one of the most unpredictable seasons during the Premiership era. Manchester City, Tottenham Hotspur and Aston Villa will all probably finish above 2005 Champions League winners Liverpool (a team touted as potential challengers last August, whilst Arsenal were still in the running until only a couple weeks ago. All can realistically aim to challenge Chelsea and Man Utds in the coming years. Does Spain really need oil money for that to become a reality in La Liga? Unfortunately it would appear so, but with the presidential systems currently in place at Spanish clubs, it's an unlikely scenario in the immediate future. Until then we'll have to make do with some enthralling tussles between Real Madrid and Barcelona.

Cristiano Ronaldo hattrick as Real Madrid storm to Mallorca win (Highlights)

Mallorca 1 - 4 Real Madrid

If Real Madrid end up snatching the league this year, they have one man to thank. Tonight Cristiano Ronaldo was absolutely inspired as he continued his one-man march to Liga glory. The Portuguese star dragged Real Madrid out of a sticky situation and into a position of complete dominance with three clinically taken goals. Mallorca, spurred on by a virtuoso display from West Brom reject Borja Valero (Xavi mark-two), peppered Iker Casillas' goal on several occasions during an impressive first half; Aritz Aduriz taking advantage of  some slack defending to put Gregorio Manzanos side infront. Casillas had to be at his agile best to keep Mallorca out thereafter, which allowed Cristiano to break into stride and single-handedly destroy the islanders with three goals that mixed class with hunger and desire. If you study each goal, in what was a stunning hat-trick, every single strike required Ronaldo to stretch that extra inch to beat the keeper or the defender. It's exactly what has defined the former World Player of the Year during his career; a willingness to push himself that extra yard; to stick his body on the line in pursuit of trophies and footballing superstardom. If only he would drop the arrogance that goes with it.

Gonzalo Higuain ended his mini goal drought with the fourth, a gorgeous chip, as Real Madrid passed their potential banana skin with flying colours. I guess La Liga will now be decided on saturday at the Sanchez Pizjuan, as anything less than a win for Barca would put Madrid firmly in the driving seat. I just cannot envisage them dropping points against Bilbao at home nor Malaga away. Not with a freescoring Ronaldo involved. So with Sevilla coming into form at just the wrong time for Barcelona, Manuel Pellegrini could well end what has been a traumatic debut season (Alcorconazo or Lyonazo anyone?) with a trophy and a record Liga points haul; a record which Barca and Real Madrid have already surpassed, underlining their complete dominance of Spanish football.

Racing Santander 1 - 5 Sevilla

This match was over as early as twenty minutes into the contest as a relegation-threatened Racing Santander wilted under a Sevilla onslaught. When Jesus Navas and Diego Capel are on-song out on the wings, Sevilla are a force to be reckoned with, as Barcelona will surely find out this weekend when they meet on saturday night. The win moved Sevilla up to fourth, with their Champions Leagues ambitions back on track, especially with Mallorca faltering. As for Racing Santander, stranded on 36 points, the last two matchdays are going to be nervous affairs. They need Sergio Canales more than ever before his trip down to Real Madrid.

Atletico Madrid 3 - 1 Real Valladolid

Real Valladolid put up an admirable fight for 43 minutes, but once Juanito had struck the first for Atletico, Valladolid accepted the inevitability of defeat. Before that goal, Manucho, Borja and Diego Costa had chances to open the scoring but they were left to rue their profligacy as Atletico Madrid took charge in the second half. The defeat leaves Real Valladolid with one foot in La Segunda, as they will surely need to get something at the Camp Nou on the last day to stay up. We all know that's not going to happen.

Real Zaragoza 1 - 0 Espanyol

While Espanyol were already practically guaranteed top flight football next year, Real Zaragoza followed suit with a controversial victory at La Romareda. Led by another stirring performance from young Ander Herrera, linked with Arsenal not too long ago, Real Zaragoza  will avoid the ignomany of two years ago when they succumbed to relegation on the final day of the season, as they sank Espanyol by the one goal. They have infamous ref Iturralde Gonzalez to thank after he awarded them a dubious penalty which was cooly converted by Adrian Colunga. What a purchase Colunga has been.

Athletic Bilbao 1 - 1 Malaga

A victory made in Barcelona. Lionel Messi (2), Pedro and Bojan scored the goals that saw Barcelona open up a four point gap (again) with only two matches to play. After Messi had dinked in the first, Carlos Puyol committed defensive suicide as half-time approached to let in Roman, whose goal gave hope to those watching in the Canaries and Madrid. But a dominant second half display saw Barca rattle in three goals in soaking conditions to ensure Real Madrid enter tomorrows clash against Mallorca under a little bit of added pressure. Tenerife simply didnt have the quality to trouble Guardiolas men after the break, with their hopes of survival taking at predictable jolt at the Camp Nou.

The fact that Jose Luis Oltra left out topscorer Nino, along with Alfaro and Marc Bertran, showed that bigger battles lay ahead for the Tinerfeños. While Lionel Messi basks in the glory of 31 league goals (and 44 in total), poor old Zlatan Ibrahimovic slouched off, subbed in the second half, after another anonymous display. Just as well the summer break is around the corner and Sweden aren´t in the World Cup. A rest will do him good.

Valencia 3 - 1 Xerez

Rather suitably, 'mata' means 'he kills' in Spanish. And thats exactly what Juan Mata did tonight to Xerezs fading hopes of saving themselves from dropping out of La Liga. When Emilio Armeteros scored the opener, I really thought that Xerez could pull another away win out of the bag. They momentarily lifted themselves off the foot of the table and the miracle escape was on; lead by the god-like figure of Nestor Gorosito. So it was a pity they couldn't get to half-time one up, as Mata curled in a delicious free-kick in added time. That goal gave the second half a whole new complexion, with Valencia fine-tuning their starstudded forward line for a 45 minute barrage which lead to a second for Mata and a goal for David Silva. Time for Xerez to start praying; wins for Malaga and Racing Santander tomorrow will send them down.

Almeria 4 - 2 Villarreal

Almeria made the most of their pace and trickery upfront to seal three points which almost certainly confirms their participation in La Liga next season. A mixture of searing speed from Crusat, an early sending off for Villarreals Mussachio and deadly finishing from Kala Uche ensured Almeria surged into a 3-0 lead. But back came Garridos side with two goals that had Juegos Mediterraneos stadium sweating until Piatti struck late on the seal the deal. I like the looks of Crusat and Piatti. Don't be surprised if bigger clubs whisk them away in the summer.

Getafe 1 - 1 Sporting Gijon

Roberto Soldado emerged from a month and a half out through injury to score a belting overhead kick which lifted Getafe into the Europa League positions and meant that Sporting have to wait another few days to mathematically save themselves from the drop. The goal from De Las Cuevas wasn't half bad either.

David Villa set to join Barcelona in the summer

If recent news is to be believed, the stage is set for David Villa to take a trip up the coast to Barcelona this summer in a €40million move also involving Bojan and Alexander Hleb. 'El Guaje' has another 4 years left on his Valencia contract, but with the Mestalla club up to their elbows in debt, 40 big ones would do very nicely indeed. If Laporta (in what will be his fairwell gift to the fans) and Guardiola succeed in staving off interest from across Europe and manage to pull this deal off, it would be fantastic news for Barca fans, as a striker in the Eto'o mould is exactly what has been missing from the Barca jigsaw this season. A striker proven at sticking the ball in the back of the net; a natural born predator. Their most recent fox in the box, Samuel Eto'o, was moved on to Inter Milan last summer by Pep Guardiola as a result of his erratic behaviour and unsettling nature, with Zlatan Ibrahimovic moved in the opposite direction. But after a positive start to his Camp Nou career, the giant swede has since flattered to deceive. His dire performance against his former club in the Champions League semi-final quite possibly the straw that broke Peps back.

Quite how Barcelona would fair with the Spanish hitman within their ranks should strike fear across Spain and Europe. And it would go down like a lead balloon in Madrid, after Ramon Calderon and Florentino Perez both tried and failed to get Villa to sign on the dotted line during the last two summer transfer windows.

If he can score for fun in Valencia, just imagine how many he would get at Barca...

Cristiano Ronaldo scored a last gasp header to keep Real Madrid in the title hunt, still only one point behind Barca. After Barcelona had dispatched of Villarreal with consumate ease yesterday, there was a certain element of pressure on Real Madrid today as they took on Jose Antonio Camachos Osasuna. Not a great performance, as Cristianos frank post-match assessment testified, but they got the job done. Sheer determination to grind out a result, coupled with a goal-hungry Cristiano Ronaldo, got Real Madrid through, after they had fell behind twice to an Osasuna side who were only playing for pride, but showed no signs of making it easy for the hosts.

Had Masoud scored an absolute sitter with the score at 2-2, it could well have been curtains for Real Madrids league challenge, as Osasuna frequently took advantage of some woeful defending. Unfortunately for Barca fans he sliced the chance hopelessly wide, and with seconds left Ronaldo stooped to nod in Higuains pinpoint cross to maintain the pressure on their Catalan rivals with three matches to play. The only hope they've got is a favour from Sevilla in two weeks time, cause you can't imagine Barca dropping points at home against Tenerife or Valladolid. For Real Madrid the most difficult remaining fixture is Mallorca away. Having rescued their hopes in the dying minutes of their last two league fixtures, it seems Barca will need 99 points to win it. Real Madrid are in no mood to go down without a fight.

Sevilla 3 - 1 Atletico Madrid

Just what Sevilla needed to continue in the hunt for that final Champions League; a weary Atletico Madrid, fresh from a marathon Europa League semi against Liverpool. Truth be told, they have performed worse this season, though having drawn level after Luis Fabiano fired Sevilla into an early lead, two penalties, which followed two slightly contentious decisions from underfire ref Perez Burrull,  coverted expertly by Alvaro Negredo gave Sevilla the spoils in a dress rehearsal for this months Copa del Rey final. Only negative for Sevilla (and Real Madrid) was a sprain to Luis Fabianos ankle, which will see him miss the league encounter against Barcelona. As for Atletico, the league is simply a practice ground for their two upcoming cup finals, although this defeat will leave Sevilla in positive mood ahead of their cup showdown at the Camp Nou.

Athletic Bilbao 1 - 3 Mallorca

Gregorio Manzano: Manager of the Year 2009/2010. Without a shadow of a doubt. A stunning away victory at Athletic Bilbao which keeps them in fourth place, two points ahead of fifth place Sevilla. One of the stories of the season. Getting Mallorca into the Champions League would be on a par with Fulham winning the Europa League (perhaps) and Steve McClarens FC Twente winning the Dutch League. Players like Chori Castro, Borja Valero and Julio Alvarez have blossomed under the guidance of the experienced manager and what was once a distant dream is now very much a realistic prospect. Bravo.
