LA LIGA ROUND UP: Matchday 12 - 29.11.09

Roberto Soldado scores hat-trick for GetafeBelieve it or not there were six other matches today in La Liga. Among the main headlines: Atlético Madrid finally get back to winning ways against Espanyol as Agüero comes good AND they keep a clean sheet, Getafe smash Xerez for five as Soldado bags a hat-trick, Osasuna take the honours in their 'local' derby against Real Zaragoza, Tenerife storm back from 3-0 down to take a point from their match at Real Valladolid and Athletic Bilbao give Almería an absolute pasting. 31 goals in all this weekend which makes it more than three a match. Good stuff. Only bad news is that it got really cold in Spain today, lot of rain around, and I had to watch El Clasico in the street as they didn't televise the match on terrestrial TV and all the bars were rammed. Should have stuck with the trusty radio....or perhaps gone to one of the 51 cinemas that were showing the match across Spain. Old School.

LA LIGA SUNDAY: El Clasico Highlights

BARCELONA 1 - 0 REAL MADRID

It was never going to be another 6-2, however much Barca wanted it to be, and so it proved. It was all about the three points, and it was Barcelona who made it three Clasico wins in a row thanks to a second-half bullet from Zlatan Ibrahimovic and a monumental performance from captain Carlos Puyol. Real Madrid can count themselves unlucky as they restricted Barca to a handful of chances and flooded a midfield that Iniesta and Xavi could never quite take control of, but it was their failure to take advantage of their chances and a ludicrous second half decision from their manager which cost them dearly.

Ronaldo early miss

Cristiano Ronaldo had a fantastic opportunity to open the scoring early in the first half, but with the whole goal to aim for, he found Victor Valdes' right boot and the chance was gone. A fit Ronaldo would surely have stuck it away. Kaká created that chance with a devastating diagonal run, and there were other moments of class from the Brazilian, but he really needs to offer more if he is ever going to justify his pricetag, especially in games of this magnitude. Personal highlights of a tense first half were Thierry Henry being caught offside literally a thousand times, the ongoing verbals between Dani Alves and that hilarious ginger linesman who never fails to entertain, Iniesta getting angry (I'd never seen it before) and a green laser being pointed in the face of Cristiano; what's that all aboot?  Real Madrid had strangled the life out of Barca and looked dangerous on the break. It was looking rosy for Pelligrinis white army.

Zlatan to the rescue

But on came Zlatan Ibrahimovic in the second half, and six minutes into his Clasico debut he had put his team infront. And what a goal it was. Pique robbed Ronaldo in the Barca box and the ball was quickly moved forward. It was eventually laid out wide for Alves and he floated a trademark pinpoint cross in from the right which Ibrahimovic (56') met first time with a volley which shot past Casillas. Sheer quality. But moments later Sergio Busquets  made the game unnecessarily difficult when he was sent off for a silly second yellow, which infuriated Guardiola, and suddenly  it looked like Real might get something from the game.

Pelligrini lost his marbles?

Luckily for Barca, Pelligrini was having none of it. Ronaldo was looking dangerous everytime he got the ball. They were a man up, 1-0 down with twenty minutes left and beginning to turn the screw. What do you do? Take Ronaldo off of course. The man from Maderia didnt looked tired or injured, so I don't buy any of this prior warning from Dr Van Dijk that he could only play 60 mins. He could rest him next week against Almería at home, tonight he was vital. The manager will be lynched by the press and I dare say he deserves it. On the pitch Puyol was a rock with three match saving blocks from Higuain twice and Marcelo. Benzema came on and had a chance from a corner but he skied it. Messi and Pique could have put Barca out of sight but missed sitters. Five minutes from time Alonso hit a corner stright out of play. Unforgivable and Florentino looked to the heavens, so he might. 280 million euros and his team still can't beat Barca. Lass was then sent off for his second yellow and all Madrids hopes trudged down the tunnel with him.

So Barca take the first Clasico of the season and with it top spot in La Liga. It was by no means a vintage Barca performance, but it was a game full of technical excellence on behalf of both sides and Madrid can take heart from a solid showing. Ibrahimovic won the battle of the summer signings, and we will now have to wait until April 2010 for round two. It can't come soon enough for Real Madrid.

LA LIGA SUNDAY: Preview 29.11.09

REAL VALLADOLID v TENERIFE (Jose Zorrilla) Sun 5pm

Tenerife really need to end this run of theirs which has seen them lose every single one of their away matches this season. Real Zaragoza suffered a similar run of away results in 2007/2008 and they went down as a result. Both sides havn't won in their last three and are hovering just above the relegation zone, so its squeeky bum time.

Both sides play with a 4-5-1 formation in an attempt to squeeze the life out of the midfield, so todays match is unlikely to be pretty. Real Valladolid will see this match as an ideal opportunity to snatch three points off a direct rival, and as they have more options going forward, so I'll go for a home win.

KEY MAN: Diego Costa (VALL)
LLL Prediction: 2-0

GETAFE v XEREZ (Coliseum) Sun 5pm

You never know which Getafe is going to turn up these days, they just can't get a run of results together and follow a fantastic result with a drab loss. 0-2 win away at Espanyol followed by a 0-2 defeat at home to Deportivo. Michel will want nothing less than three points against La Ligas bottom side. Casquero is back in the fold and the home fans will be hoping Soldado has his shooting boots on.

My dear Xerez! How they stuggle to put the ball in the net. Last week they were immense and so unlucky not to beat Sporting. Sidi Keita (my new hero) put in a spectacular shift in the middle and was unlucky not to stick in a contender for goal of the season with a stunning overhead kick; the Mali man is pure box-office. But I fear the best they can hope for is another goalless draw, because for all their effort you need to put the chances away. And they don't.

KEY MAN: Roberto Soldado (GET)
LLL Prediction: 0-0

RACING SANTANDER v DEPORTIVO LA CORUÑA (El Sardinero) Sun 5pm

Racing fans havn't had much to cheer about recently. They've lost their manager, are on a dreadful run of results in the league and havn't won at home for almost 200 days! But the team they probably didn't want to face in an attempt to end that run was Deportivo who are yet to lose there since 1996. Already sucked into the bottom three they really need to pull all the stops out and give their new coach his first win since his return to the club.

Deportivo have gone about their business this year with an efficiency typified by coach Lotina. Without any superstars in the side they are tucked nicely inside the top five and a Champions League place is clearly up for grabs. They'll be hoping their silky full back Guardado is fit for the occasion, but apart from that they have no injury worries. A win will see them sidle up beside Sevilla and Valencia, and I reckon they'll get it.

KEY MAN: Riki (DEP)
LLL Prediction: 0-1

ALMERÍA v ATHLETIC BILBAO (Estadio Mediterráneo) Sun 5pm

Two sides that are going quietly about their business. Hugo Sanchez is working wonders at Almería with a limited but willing set of players under his control. Young Piatti is an exciting player who I can see moving to a big side in the future, whilst Uche is the player they rely upon to get the goals.

Caparros can't have expected his team to have started the season so well, with the draw against Barcelona confirming their continued improvement from last year. Llorente is always a danger upfront and Fran Yeste works his socks off in the middle, adding grit to his undoubted class on the ball. One player I would like to see play today is little Iker Muniain. Games like this are perfect for his development. Let him loose!

KEY MAN: Fernando Llorente (BIL)
LLL Prediction: 1-1

ZARAGOZA v OSASUNA (La Romareda) Sun 5pm

I was at this match two seasons ago and whilst they're not that close geographically, both sets of fans see this game as a local derby. Expect a scrappy match, with both teams seeing it as a chance to plant three points on the board, so they can sleep easier over xmas. Zaragoza are falling into the same pattern of results as two years ago and we all know what happened to them that season.

Both teams are experiencing an injury crisis which has left both frontlines depleted. Jermaine Pennant had got his Zaragoza career off to a good start but injury has robbed him of a chance to get a good run of games in. Big shame. Ewerthon is looking like he'll miss out for Zaragoza, whereas Pandiani is definitely out through suspension for Osasuna, so expect the odd goal to settle it.

KEY MAN: Angel Lafita (ZAR)
LLL Prediction: 1-0

BARCELONA v REAL MADRID (Camp Nou) Sun 7pm

It's all been said in the press, we've got the lights and cameras and now it's time for the action. Half the planet will sit down tonight in anticipation of the footballing feast on offer at the Camp Nou as Spain's two greatest of rivals lock horns in the first Clasico of 2009/2010. We'll all have our predictions; we all think we know what to expect, but the truth is games like this can throw up any result, as last seasons 2-6 proved.

Both Messi and Ronaldo are expected to start, and Ronaldo will be keen to level the score after Messi outplayed his rival for the Balon D'Or in last seasons Champions League final. It also seems Pelligrini has come to his senses and will start Higuaín alongside Benzema. Ibrahimovic appears to have recovered in time to lead the line for Barca.

KEY MAN: There are too many to name just one
LLL Prediction: 2-1

ATLETICO MADRID v ESPANYOL (Vicente Calderon) Sun 9pm

Out of the Champions League and second from bottom, Atlético can't aim for anything less than three points against an Espanyol team in the middle of a crisis of results themselves. As always, much will rest on Agüero and Forlán and whether or not the backline has learned how to defend in the last week. A loss could see them hit the bottom and the panic bells would really start to ring.

For Espanyol their week has been ruined with the news that talented midfielder Ivan De La Peña might have to retire because of his ongoing thigh problem. A huge shame for the classy ex-Barca player. Tamudo and Luis Garcia will be reunited in attack. The match has draw written all over it.

KEY MAN: The whole Atlético backline.
LLL Prediction: 1-1

LA LIGA RESULTS + HIGHLIGHTS: 28.11.09

SPORTING 1 - 0 VILLARREAL

Villarreal never got going in this one and they see their recent comeback put to a halt. Nilmar, Pires and Rossi never got into the match, and you know if they don't play well, the yellow submarine is going to struggle. Senna was their best player on the day, performing his habitual task of breaking things up in the middle but with nothing going on ahead of him it was a lonely existence for the Brazilian-born midfielder. Diego Lopez kept up his reputation as a spot-kick expert with saves from two Gijon penalties.

Unfortunately for Lopez, Sportings Croatian striker Mate Bilic was first to react from the first save and slotted in after 75 mins to give his side the three points. They're surprising everyone this season, and find themselves a point off the European places, although it's doubtful they'll be able to maintain this superb run for much longer. Saying that, relegation doesnt look likely either and thats something coach Preciado would have settled for before a ball was kicked in September.

VALENCIA 1 - 1 MALLORCA

Not a great day for the 'Los Che' as they let a goal lead slip and lost David Silva to a serious looking injury. Valencia were dominating when Silva went down clutching his knee and their play suffered without the little playmaker from the Canary Islands. I'd put him at the same level as Iniesta, he's that good, and without him Valencia lacked the same bite in attack; let's hope he's back soon. That said Villa and Pablo Hernandez had chances to put their team out of sight but they found Mallorca keeper Aouate in inspired form.

Villa tapped in three minutes into the second half after Benenga had shot across the area, but they couldn't find the killer second goal. And they were made to pay because five minutes from time defender Bruno inexplicably barged into Castro in the area (god knows what he was thinking), and former West Brom midfielder Borja completed the formalities from 12 yards. Mallorca manager Gregorio Manzano must be favourite to take over from Del Bosque when he retires as Spain coach, because the man is tactical genius personified. Bravo.

SEVILLA 2 - 2 MALAGA

So much for my 4-0 prediction! And if it was a long night for any team it was most definitely for Sevilla. They had several clear chances in the first half, whilst Malaga had two. And yet it was the away side who went in at half time 0-2 up. Fernando side-footed in after some choas in the Sevilla area, and former Sevillano Duda struck the second after a deflected shot fell into his path. But the Portguese winger enjoyed that. He certainly looked like he did.

Luckily for Sevilla they have a lad upfront called Luis Fabiano, and he's lethal. Two chances came his way in the second half and he stuck them both away. First was a bullet header, the second a glorious low strike from a Kanoute flick. He is now tenth in Sevillas list of all-time top goalscorers, and his price tag just keeps on rising.

LA LIGA MATCHDAY 12 PREVIEW: 28.11.09

SPORTING GIJON v VILLARREAL (El Molinon) Sat 6pm
Sporting have turned El Molinon into a fortress this year, and are yet to lose at home. Last week they struggled at Xerez, especially in the second half, and were lucky to come away with a point. Manuel Preciado will hope his team have shaken off that poor performance, with a team on the rise coming to town.

Villarreal have put their dreadful start to the season behind them and have won three of their last four. Nilmar has finally found some form infront of goal and Ibergaza, Senna and Cani are available after injury layoffs. Manager Ernesto Valverde is looking for his first win away from home this season and I believe today will be the day Villarreal put that record to bed.

KEY PLAYER: Nilmar (VILL)
LLL Prediction: 1-2

VALENCIA v MALLORCA (La Mestalla) Sat 8pm
Valencia will be hoping for more of the same after last weeks impressive performance at Osasuna, with the possibility of closing the gap on the top two. Marchena and Albelda shielded the back four impeccably and allowed the famous four to strut their stuff at the other end. Villa, Mata, PH and Silva are probably the finest attacking quartet in world football at the moment, and they'll be too hot to handle for Mallorca's defence.

Mallorca have a perfect record at the ONO Estadi, but away from home they are yet to win. A lot will rest on the shoulders of their two strikers Webo and Aduriz, who have what it takes to punish a makeshift Valencia back four, but will they get the ammunition?

KEY MAN: David Villa (VAL)
LLL Prediction: 3-1

SEVILLA v MALAGA (Sanchez Pizjuan) Sat 10pm
Sevilla enter this Andaluz derby 17 places and 19 points above their regional rivals, and with half an eye on sundays Clasico. If they win, and tomorrows clash finishes in a draw, only a point will separate the top three. Wingers Perotti and Navas are on fire and Luis Fabiano will be looking to continue his goalscoring streak. Should be too much for Malaga.

Malaga seem to have the Sevilla side sussed at the Sanchez Pijuan, after winning five and drawing two of their last eight visits to the stadium. But this so far this season they have been a shadow of last years surprise package, and have resorted to a more physical approach that has yielded 43 yellow cards so far this season. Will be a long night for La Ligas bottom side.

KEY MAN: Jesus Navas (SEV)
LLL Prediction: 4-0

Barcelona / Real Madrid Dream Team

Today Marca offers you the once in a lifetime opportunity to pick a Barca/Madrid XI, and as you can see I couldn't resist. Not the easiest of tasks and I feel a little bit guilty about loading it with Barca players, but with what Marca gave me, this is exactly how I would line them up. If I had it all my way, and to fit in Cristiano Ronaldo, I'd go for an attacking 3-5-2 formation, take out the left-back to leave a back three (cause quite frankly they would never have much to do) and stick Ronaldo on the right, Messi on the left, Lass protecting and Kaká playing just behind Ibrahimovic. Xavi and Iniesta mixing it up in the middle. Frightening.

1.VALDES v CASILLAS: Madrid stopper best in the world

2.ALVES v RAMOS: Alves safer at the back. Greater goal threat

3.PIQUÉ v ALBIOL:   Pique best in the business right now

4.PUYOL v PEPE:   A leader of men. Vital for the big occasions

5.MAXWELL v ARBELOA:   Barca man settled in quicker of the two

6.TOURE v LASS:   Madrids most consistent performer

7.XAVI v ALONSO:   Xavi runs the show. Alonso not quite found his feet yet at Madrid.

8.INIESTA v MARCELO:   Only one winner. Iniesta is a class apart

9. MESSI v RONALDO:   El Clasico experience settles it. So difficult to choose between the two

10. IBRAHIMOVIC v BENZEMA:   7 goals for Zlatan. Frenchman hasn´t shown his class yet

11. HENRY v KAKÁ:    Brazilian able to turn a match in an instant

LA LIGA NEWS - El Clasico Special 09/10

The world of Spanish football is whipped up in a frenzy of white, red and blue. Front pages are washed in pictures of Ronaldo, Messi, Casillas and Xavi. El Clasico has arrived. On sunday evening all eyes will be fixed on the Camp Nou as Barcelona and Real Madrid  cross swords at the summit of La Liga. The weeks press has been full of the usual bravado and mindgames. Cristiano stated how he wants to stick ten  past the Catalans and that he wouldn't sign one player from Barca; ambitious and a lie. Piqué keeps harking back to last years triple; predictable. Dani Alves reckons Real Madrid are placing all their eggs in a CR9 shaped basket; most probably true.

Last seasons humiliating 2-6 demolition job has Real Madrid fans and players foaming at the mouth. Revenge is the order of the day. Barcelona are still smarting from being overtaken in the league last week, they didn't see that coming. Iker Casillas joked how he can only see Barca from the comfort of his rearview mirror. He should enjoy it while he can, because for all their efficiency in griding out results and for all their individual class, a convincing win for the Guardiolas men is where the smart money will be heading.

If the reports are to believed, Manuel Pelligrini is going to sacrifice Gonzalo Higuaín for Karim Benzema. What the Chilean is proposing is footballing suicide, and you can only imagine the reaction from the capital if this mindless decision is followed by another Barca rout. His team have performed a miracle in overtaking Barca in the league without their Portuguese record signing, and they deserve an enormous amount of credit for doing so on the back of some incessant pressure from outside the club. But with Ronaldo having only just recovered from his 56 day injury break, it will be asking too much for him to lead Florentinos new band of galacticos to a debut Camp Nou victory.

If Real Madrid are to stand a chance, Higuaín must start. They need Kaká to step up to the plate. The Brazilian star has largely flattered to deceive since his big money move from Milan. They need Casillas and Pepe at their very best. If Iniesta and Xavi are given time and space in midfield, Madrid will be ripped to shreds. Lass will have to hustle and hound more than ever. And they need Barcelona to have an off-night. The last requirement is not entirely unimaginable as Barca have struggled to convert possession into goals in the league at times, especially in the first half against Bilbao last weekend. But normal service was ominously resumed against Inter Milan on tuesday.

Both teams will march into the Camp Nou with a skip in their step. Let battle commence.

For Barca fans some inspiration. For Madrid fans some motivation. Last seasons historic clasico from the Bernabeu.

PEDRO: Little Pedro fast becoming the main man

'Pedrito' arrived at the Camp Nou in August 2004 after making waves at hometown club CD San Isidro of Tenerife as a youngster. Five years on we have Pedro the man, and he is proving to be an absolute revelation after scoring 7 in 14 games, including a cup winning goal in the Supercup against Bilbao. With the options Barca have in attack, it must be a daunting task trying to create a gap for yourself in that star-studded line-up, but the kid from the Canaries is giving Guardiola serious food for thought as he prepares his team for this weekends clash against Real Madrid.

Father figure Pep Guardiola

His journey through the ranks started in the 'Juvenils' but it wasn't until the 2007/2008 season that his immense promise was unleashed on the first team squad. That year he helped the Barcelona B side into the 'Segunda B' (Third Division) scoring 6 in 36 games and he was rewarded with two appearances in the first team by Frank Rijkaard, against Murcia and Valladolid. Rijkaard was moved on at the end of that season, with his Barca B boss Pep Guardiola given the hotseat and it is this close relationship with the manager that has helped Pedro make the leap so smoothly. In pre-season 2008/2009 Pep took him to Scotland, with the 'canterano' scoring his first goal for the first team on that tour and it was then that his transition from 'Pedrito' to 'Pedro' was complete.

Triple success 2008/2009

That season saw him play a part in both the Spanish Cup final against Athletic Bilbao and the Champions League final against Manchester United, as Barca won an unprecedented Triple; some way to start your career. These experiences are now bearing fruit as he goes from strength to strength in 2009; overtaking Bojan in the pecking order and scoring his first competitive goal which won Barcelona the Spanish Supercup in September against Athletic Bilbao. Since then he hasn't stopped scoring, bagging his first Champions League goal against Dynamo Kiev in September and putting Inter Milan to the sword this week with a perfectly timed run that gave him space to slot in Alves' cross.

Spain call-up on the horizon?

Equally comfortable with both feet, Pedro can play on either wing or up-front, as is currently being used by Guardiola as one of a three-pronged attack in Barca's stylish 4-3-3 formation. It's difficult to specify one outstanding trait in Pedro's repetoire: he's quick but not lightning quick, he's skilfull but not mesmerisingly so. Able to take defenders on and possessing a sweet strike his success is part down to his extraordinary technical ability (see the goal against Almeria below!), something developed at Barca from an early age and which has rewarded the club with world class talent such as Xavi, Iniesta and Messi. The number 17 is the most recent to roll off the conveyor belt, and is now firmly fixed on Del Bosques radar, with fans clamouring for his inclusion in the Spanish national team. It won't be easy but nothing could alert the Spain coach more than a match-winning performance against Real Madrid on sunday.

CHAMPIONS LEAGUE 25.11.09 - Higuaín to the rescue...again

Real Madrid 1 - 0 Zurich

The Madrid manager had perhaps fooled some when he said Barcelona wasn't on his mind, but his players weren't up to keeping the cat in the bag. Nothing else can explain a drab encounter in which the only highlights were Iker Casillas celebrating 100 Champions League matches and Cristiano coming through just over 20 minutes unscathed. If this was Real Madrid with their minds finely tuned on a match, their problems run deeper than we suspected.

There is a lack of  'feeling' among the players; no patterns, no understanding. The only man capable of drawing blood is the man who saves them time and again. Argentinian Higuaín must have looked on forlornly last summer as Madrid sprayed Euros around like nobodies business. But he has knuckled down admirably and at the moment is their most potent weapon, an inspiration. His goal came after 21 minutes and was the fruit of defensive work from Lass and Kakás vision: a low shot into the net from inside the box, typical Higuaín ruthlessness. Marcelo later smacked the post with a sweetly struck shot and was an intermittent danger down the right, laughing in the face of my criticism of him as a winger. But there's no doubt who will be filling that position this weekend.

The Bernabeu deserves better than this. Zurich were there for the taking but Real Madrid failed to administer a goalrush that would have sent them packing to the Camp Nou on a high. Instead they will have the final whistle jeers ringing in their ears; hardly the ideal send off. So, next up El Clasico. Pelligrini has a few days on the training ground to sort it out, otherwise if Barca's perfromance against Inter is anything to go by, another 6-2 could be on the cards.

Apoel Nicosia 1 - 1 Atlético Madrid

A draw was the best Atlético Madrid could have hoped for in a match in which they had hardly had two chances. Luckily for the Madrileños, Simao took one of them after an hour which cancelled out Mirosavljevic's opener after 5 minutes. Agüero burst down the right wing and crossed for Forlán whose attempt at a shot was diverted away where Simao managed to get in a shot which took a deflection before entering the net. The Portuguese winger has been a dissapointment this season, so the goal will do him the world of good.

The Apoel goal summed up exactly where Atlético have been going wrong this year; another case of the 'mattressmen' caught napping. Ujfalusi was turned inside out on the left and Perea lost his marker, leaving striker Mirosavljevic in acres of space only a few yards out; Asenjo horribly exposed once more. These defensive lapses are costing Atlético dearly and it's hard to see Quique being able to sort it out any time soon. Their best bet is to play a game of  'you score three, we'll score four', but with Forlán and Agüero a shade of the dynamic duo they were last season, the goals have dried up.

The good news is at least they still have their Europa League fate in their own hands and they will be looking to complete the job in the final group stage match at home against Porto. The bad news is they might have to win.

CHAMPIONS LEAGUE Wednesday Preview 25.11.09

Real Madrid v Zurich (Santiago Bernabeu) 8.45pm

According to Pelligrini, he hasn't even started thinking about this weekends match against Barcelona. Of course not Manuel. Especially with the tough home tie against Zurich to concentrate the mind first! Real Madrid owe their fans a good old thrashing and Zurich would appear to be tailor made for such an occasion. Or would some prefer to see some fancy football regardless of the result? It's hard to know these days, but a defeat could leave them in serious danger of missing out on the knockout round. Three points it is then.

Madrid fans will be delighted to see the return of Cristiano Ronaldo after nearly two months out; Marcelo isn't bad by any means, but a right winger he is not. Pelligrini will be like a child at Christmas waiting to unleash his Portguese goal machine on the best Swiss football has to offer. Let's see if the Chilean gives the Bernabeu what it wants, what it really really wants.

For the last two matches it has been reported that Raúl was going to start, and for the last two matches he has been plonked on the bench.  Benzema and Higuaín seem to work well together, so I can't see any reason why he would want to break up this promising partnership in favour of giving the veteran a run.

Apoel Nicosia v Atlético Madrid (Georgios Karaiskakis Stadium) 8.45pm

It's fair to say Atlético Madrid have had happier times. Out of the Champions League and in the lower reaches of La Liga, tonight they will try and secure their passage into the Europa League. They will take anything right now and a win tonight could see the odd smile appear on the faces of the Rojiblanco supporters. It's been a while since they had something to cheer about.

The Cypriots have a fanatical following and the atmosphere will be piping tonight in the Georgios K Stadium. As always, Forlán and Agüero will be asked to carry the team as it seems there's no-one else willing to do it at the moment. Will Simao and Maxi finally step up to the plate? Will the defence hold firm ? A big ask for a team accustomed to letting in goals for fun.

Sergio Asenjo was hailed as the new Casillas at the start of the season, and although he has perfomed miracles at times this year his goals conceded column doesnt look pretty; the young keeper must wish he'd stayed at Valladolid for a bit longer, or just gone somewhere else.

Champions League Tuesday: Barcelona - Inter Milan

Barcelona 2 - 0 Inter Milan (Camp Nou)

Guardiola talked the talk, and boy did his men walk the walk. Barcelona sent out a shivering message to the rest of Europe with a five star performance against Mourinho's Inter Milan. Italy's top side was teased from the first minute to the last, with Barca's defence so watertight Eto'o and Milito were left gasping for air.

Piqué managed to poke home from a corner in the 9th minute even though his shirt was being ripped from his back as he shot. The second arrived in the 25th minute, following a stunning team move which ended with Dani Alves floating one in from the right for young Pedro to run onto and sidefoot-volley through Lucio and Julio Cesar and into the net. What a season the youngster is having.

Barcelona were helped by Rubin Kazan drawing earlier on, and showed no signs of nerves in serving up the type of performance we've come so accustomed to in recent seasons. Dani Alves was superb all night long, defending his little heart out and always offering an option in attack.

Unirea Urziceni 1 - 0 Sevilla (Ghencea)

Sevilla travelled to Romania hoping to seal the deal at the top of Group G, but will travel back to Spain needing to complete the task in their next Champions League match against Rangers.

Jimenez's team never got going and in truth didnt deserve to take anything from the game, but the manner in which they conceded the goal won't please the gaffer. Unirea lofted a free kick into the Sevilla penalty area, and with not one Romanian player in the box, Dragutinovic planted a spectacular header into his own net. That Belgian keeper will sleep a little easier tonight!

Sevilla started without Luis Fabiano and Perotti, but as the game wore on Jimenez felt compelled to introduce the two dangermen. But they failed to turn around what was a dismal second half, and Dan Petrescu's unfancied outfit have put themselves on the brink of qualifying for the next round. Who said the Champions League was predictable?!

Champions League Preview: 24.11.09 - Eto'o out for revenge

Barcelona v Inter Milan (Camp Nou) 8.45pm
  • Barcelona will know by kick-off exactly how important this match is. If Rubin Kazan manage to beat Dynamo Kiev at home (6.30pm) then defeat to Inter will put an end to Barca's defence of the trophy; a nightmare scenario for last years triple winners.
  • Jose Mourinho and Samuel Eto'o will be returning to their former home. One is likely to recieve a rapturous applause, the other a right royal heckling. 'The translator' still hasnt been forgiven for past grievances with the Catalan club when manager of Chelsea. Former 'cule' hero Eto'o will be looking to exact revenge on former boss Guardiola, who was largely to blame for his forced exit.
  • Messi and Ibrahimovic are doubts, although I have my suspicions the big Swede will play some part in the match. Yaya Toure is still out with swine flu, whilst Pique and Puyol will have to be on their toes with Eto'o and Diego Milito capable of scoring out of nothing. Nerves will be jangling tonight at the Camp Nou.

Unirea Urziceni v Sevilla (Ghencea) 8.45pm
  • In stark contrast to Barca's problems, Sevilla have already confirmed their passage into the knock-out stages and travel to Romania with the solitary task of mathematically securing top spot. Luis Fabiano likely to be rested, with Kanoute looking to further his comeback from injury.
  • Dan Petrescu's Romanian team have been a revelation in this years tournament, and will be looking for a win to to edge themselves closer to qualifying for the next stage. Stuttgart and Rangers will be hoping Sevilla can do them a huge favour, as they both play for their futures in the competition in the other group tie.
  •  Chelsea fans might want to look away! Tom Henning Ovrebo will be taking charge of tonights match, for the first time in the Champions League since that fateful night at Stamford Bridge.

La Liga News: 24.11.09 El Clasico: Messi v Ronaldo: The race to be fit

With important Champions League matches tonight and tomorrow, and 'El Clasico' this weekend coming, the stars of both Madrid and Barcelona are tied up in a race against time. Both are carrying knocks, and the whole episode is providing a tense build-up to the biggest fixture in spanish football. Will they? Won't they? Of course they will.

Pep Guardiola is confident his Barcelona side can win the two matches against Inter Milan and Real Madrid, without Leo Messi and Zlatan Ibrahimovic. I guess when you've got Iniesta, Xavi, Pedro and man-of-the-moment Terry Henry as back up you can afford a few injuries!

Spain coach Vicente del Bosque has renewed his contract until after the 2012 European Championships, but has the intention of retiring after the World Cup in Brazil, 2014. Every manager in the world must be envious of that man. What.a.squad.

Atlético Madrid are desparate to win in Cyprus against Apoel Nicosia. In order to save face, go out of the Champions League on a high and give a suffering fan base something to cheer about? Nope, to balance the books. And we wonder why they're in trouble.

Valencia have joined Atlético Madrid and Zaragoza in the race to sign Russia's hottest property, 'Chori' Dominguez. The striker has just finished the Russian season as league winner after his side Rubin Kazan won on the final day to seal the championship.

AND FINALLY: Think you´ve seen the worst own goal ever? Think again. This weekend the rather clumsy goalkeeper of Belgian team Roeselare, Jurgen Sierens, provided a moment that will play a starring role in Christmas videos for years to come. Priceless.

And of course, if you can think of a better/worse own goal please leave a comment and link below so we can all have a little snigger!

'El Resumen' - La Liga News 23.11.09 - Pelligrini has last laugh

After weeks of speculation surrounding the future of Chilean Manuel Pelligrini as Real Madrid's manager, 'The Engineer' has had the last laugh. Real Madrid have enjoyed their best start to a league campaign for 17 years and go into 'El Clasico' one point ahead of their rivals. Not a bad way to answer your critics, but as we all know, winning isn't everything in the Bernabeu and things will certainly change if Barca hand out another 6-2 drubbing.

Pep Guardiola not fussed about going into the match-up with Real Madrid next week behind them in the league. He has more important fish to fry at the moment with the important Champions League tie against Mourinho's Inter Milan on wednesday, and it seems he will have Lionel Messi available after intial reports suggested he would miss out.

Portuguese side Benfica are interested in re-signing Atlético Madrid winger Simao, with the winger struggling to put in consistent performances in the Vicente Calderon. Meanwhile his team have marked their worst start to a season since 1953/54. Quique needs to turn things around quick-sharp.

Sevilla seem to be linked with pretty much anyone available with the January transfer window looming. Ajax midfielder Enoh Eyong and Lyon's Clerc the most recent names to come out of the press.

La Liga's very own Peter Crouch, Valencia's Nicola Zigic, is rumoured to be a target for Turkish club Fenerbache, the current home of Spain striker Dani Güiza.

Liverpool boss Rafa Benitez is scouring the Santiago Bernabeu as he plots to solve his team's dependency on Fernando Torres. Ruud Van Nistlerooy is the man Rafa is after, and the Dutch hitman wants away from Madrid if he doesn't get starts, although a move to Liverpool wouldn't go down well with old club Manchester United. Maybe revenge for the Red Devils signing Michael Owen.

AND FINALLY:  With 'El Clasico' only days away, the handbags are already out in force. Kaká started proceedings with a shot at 'Los Cules': 'Barcelona are a team in trouble'. But 'Azulgrana' defender Gerard Piqué wasted no time in responding with 'Hows your treble going?' in reference to Madrid's cupset against Alcorcón, and followed it up with 'The only treble you'll be getting is when we stick three past you'. It promises to be an entertaining week.

La Liga Round-up: 22.11.09 Nilmar uses his head

Villarreal 3 - 1 Real Valladolid (El Madrigal)

Villarreal continued their rise up La Liga table with a well deserved win against a dissapointing Real Valladolid. Brazilian striker Nilmar finally displayed the outstanding quality he has shown with the Brazilian national side with two excellently taken goals. The first was a well placed header from a pinpoint Escudero cross in the 6th minute. His second came just after half-time, as he raced onto a Godín long ball to plant a header over the onrushing keeper, Villar, and into an empty net. He also played a part in the third when he set up Rossi's 56th minute bullet with a deft headed flick which completely isolated a lamentable Valladolid defence. The away side did get on the scoresheet when Diego Costa capitalised on a dreadful backpass from Marcano to steal in, take it past Diego Lopez and cooly sidefoot in from an angle. Valladolid see their fine league run put to an abrupt end as Villarreal are finally beginning to look like a team capable of challenging for the European positions.

Mallorca 3 - 1 Almería (ONO Estadi)

Two lates goals saw Mallorca continue their storming home form and charge up to sixth place in La Liga. This from a team that was widely predicted to be within the relegation candidates at the start of the season. Mallorca went ahead in the 48th minute when Gonzalo Castro planted an excellent driven effort inside Alves' nearpost. But Almería were in fiery mood and could have drawn level on numerous occasions but they found the home stopper, Aouate in determined mood with some super saves. They did finally level in the 76th minute when a solo run from Piatti finished with him squaring across for David Rodriguez to slot in from close range. It seemed Hugo Sanchez's men were set to earn a deserved point when two goals in the last two minutes shot them down and left the coach to regret his team's previous profligacy. Victor chested down in the area to smash in on 88 minutes with Castro firing in his second in stoppage time; Manzano's red army march on.

Xerez 0 - 0 Sporting Gijón (Chapin)
  • Xerez and Sporting both hit the post twice in a thoroughly entertaining encounter in a charged Chapin atmosphere. I was lucky enough to be there and this was not your typical 0-0 bore draw!
  • Sidi Keita was outstanding in Xerez's midfield and was unlucky not to score with an outrageous overhead kick which Juan Pablo clawed out. The Sporting keeper kept his side in it with several top drawer saves.
  • If Xerez can't score with the opportunities they had today it is going to be a long hard season ahead. Luck wasn't on their side yet again but they need to start converting their numerous chances into precious goals.

Espanyol 0 - 2 Getafe (Cornella Estadi)
  • Not even the return of local hero Raúl Tamudo was enough to reignite Espanyol´s goalthreat. If this continues they could begin to see themselves pulled into a relegation tussle.
  • Casquero marked his return to the side with the goal in the 78th min which effectively won Getafe the match. Pedro Rios scored the second a minute into injury time with a superb diving header.
  • Entertaining match that was in stark contrast to the boring Copa del Rey ties. Espanyol unable to exact revenge for their cup exit.

Malaga 1 - 1 Zaragoza (La Rosaleda)
  • Two sendings off (Weligton for a punch, Paredes for two yellows) in a physical match that exploded into life after a dull first half. Both teams were after maximum points but had to settle for a point each.
  • Lafita 'dive' earned Zaragoza a penalty (49 mins) which Brazilian Ewerthon converted (just). Málaga levelled with a headed goal from impressive debutant centre back Iván González.
  • Neither manager will be happy with a game marred with some regrettable behaviour from some players. Apoño spat in Herrera's face, which was not seen by the ref.

Osasuna 1 - 3 Valencia (Reyno Navarra)
  • Two sendings off for Osasuna (Padiani and Flaño) epitomised what was a miserable night for the home side. They never looked like getting anything from the match.
  • Unai Emery's Valencia side go from strength to strength. Goals from Villa and veterans Albelda (stunning effort) and Marchena (Tony Yeboah style!) had put the game to bed by the 56th min. Consolation goal for Osasuna through a Masoud header after 67 mins.
  • Have Valencia got the strength in depth to mount a serious title assault? It's beginning to look like it could turn into a four-horse race.

La Liga Sunday Preview 22.11.09

Sunday offers six interesting fixtures with teams already fighting for their lives at the foot of the table. • Almería 5 points off relegation zone, Nigerian Uche key to any hopes for three points
  • 'Hombre Clave' - Aritz Aduriz (Mallorca)
  • Livin La Liga Prediction: 2-0
Málaga - Zaragoza (7pm)
  • Málaga fans fed up with coach Muñiz, a loss could spell the end for the under-fire manager
  • Zaragoza have a shocking away record; Málaga hopeless at home. Something has to give
  • Zaragoza coach Marcelino will be in the stands. His team need to stop leaking goals for fun
  • 'Hombre Clave' - Angel Lafita (Zaragoza)
  • Livin La Liga Prediction: 1-1
Osasuna - Valencia (9pm)
  • Osasuna are a match for anyone in the Reyno Navarra. Will look to take advantage of set plays.
  • Valencia have Juan Mata missing, with Joaquin hoping to make the most of his chance
  • Referee under pressure after declarations from Valencia manager Unai Emery. He will need to be strong in hostile atmosphere
  • 'Hombre Clave' - David Silva (Valencia)
  • Livin La Liga Prediction: 1-3

La Liga Results and Reports 21.11.09 - Madrid bask in Barca slip up

Athletic Bilbao 1 - 1 Barcelona (San Mames)

Barcelona let a lead slip to allow their great rivals Real Madrid to leapfrog over them in the league and go into 'El Clasico' one point ahead. The first half saw Barcelona display their usual fluidity in attack, with Messi and Pedro particularly busy, but they clearly lacked the leadership and reference that injured Zlatan Ibrahimovic brings. Atheltic were in determined mood, summed up by Fran Yeste's industrious performance in the heart of the Bilbao midfield. Barca went ahead in the 53rd minute with a sublime Xavi throughball finding Dani Alves' run, who cooly slotted past Iraizoz. But Barcelona failed to create much more thereafter and were made to pay when a defensive lapse allowed Toquero to smash emphatically past Valdés. Things got worse for Barcelona when Lionel Messi limped off, and he is now a serious doubt for the clash against Madrid. Testing times for Guardiola's men who now face two massive ties in the next week.

Real Madrid 1 - 0 Racing Santander (Santiago Bernabeu)

Real Madrid eased more pressure off Manuel Pelligrini and ensured they would arrive to the Camp Nou as league leaders after a hard-fought win against Racing Santander. It certainly wasn't a vintage performance from 'Los Merengues', who surprisingly started with Raúl on the bench, but they will be more than happy with the three points. Miguel Portugal's side pushed Madrid to the limit and can be proud of a determined display, in which they had a perfectly legal goal ruled out for offside late on. But they succumbed to a goal in the 22nd minute which ended up settling the match in Real's favour. A Kaká cross had caused panic in the Santander box and when Garay eventually headed a loose ball towards goal, Higuaín was on hand to tap in. Another priceless goal from the Argentine forward, who has a knack of scoring when it matters most. Karim Benzema had a goal disallowed and a valid penalty turned down, but another indifferent display will do little to convince the Bernabeu of his promise.

Deportivo La Coruña 2 - 1 Atlético Madrid (Riazor)

Depor continued their impressive league form and pushed themselves into the Champions League positions with a late victory against a poor Atletico Madrid. Forlán was expected to partner Agüero upfront but was left on the subs bench, following his long journey after helping Uruguay to the World Cup. But his partner wasted no time in putting 'Los Colchoneros' ahead in the 3rd minute when 'El Kun' nipped the ball off a dallying defender to race into the box and shoot across Aranzubia. But from the on it was wave after wave of attacks from the home side as Asenjo's goal was constantly under siege. Coruña centre back Colloto took advantage of some slack marking to nod home a corner in the 20th minute, but they had to wait until the 95th for the winner. The Atletico players went apoplectic when the ref pointed the spot after Pablo uprooted Lopo, but the decision was the correct one and Guardado kept his cool to send Asenjo the wrong way and shoot Depor ever further up La Liga.

Tenerife 1 - 2 Sevilla (Heliodoro)

Tenerife showed they have enough fight and passion to survive in 'La Liga' this year, but their lack of firepower will seriously worry coach Oltra as they fight against relegation. Sevilla showed glimpses of their undoubted class, and in the end it was two moments of quality that earned them the win. A lightning burst from Jesus Navas gave him enough space to provide a perfect ball across goal which gave winger Perotti the simple task of stroking the ball into the net with half an hour gone. Just after half-time Renato put them 2-0 up with a sweet strike from just outside the area which went in off the post. Tenerife edged back into the match after 75 minutes when Nino scored with a well-taken volley, but an injury-hit Sevilla hung on to clinch another vital three points in their three-way dogfight at the top with Real Madrid and Barcelona.

La Liga - Spanish Football: Saturday Preview 21.11.09

Tonight new manager Miguel Portugal take his Racing Santander side to the Bernabeu for what he hopes to be a triumphant start to his second spell at the club. Barcelona have a tricky trip to Athletic Bilbao, the team they defeated in last years cup final and the Supercup in September. There promises to be an entertaining tie at the Riazor as Deportivo take on an Atlético Madrid side desparate for a win, whilst Tenerife will be looking to steal something from their home match with Sevilla to give themselves some breathing space at the bottom of La Liga.

Deportivo La Coruña v Atlético Madrid (Riazor - 6pm)
  • Forlán and Agüero to be reunited. They will be expected to fire Atlético to a much needed away win.
  • Veteran Valeron to start. A class act and Deportivo will look to his vision for inspiration.
  • Can Deportivo maintain their Champions League push? Can Atlético win a league match?
  • 'Hombre Clave' - Jurado (Atlético)
  • Livin La Liga Prediction: 1-1
Tenerife v Sevilla (Heliodoro - 6pm)
  • Sevilla struggling with injuries in defence, is this Tenerife's chance to down a big-gun?
  • 'Tete' havn't won since October 25th. Winger Omar will need to be on fire if they want to end that record.
  • Luis Fabiano and Negredo too much for weak Tenerife defence?
  • 'Hombre Clave' - Omar (Tenerife)
  • Livin La Liga Prediction: 0-2
Real Madrid v Racing Santander (Bernabeu - 8pm)
  • New Racing manager Portugal looking for a storming start to new reign. Too much to ask?
  • Raúl to start with Benzema. Higuaín on the bench where he won't be joined by Cristiano Ronaldo.
  • A loss could be fatal for Pelligrini who'll be without midfield dynamo Lass through injury.
  • 'Hombre Clave' - Kaká (Real Madrid)
  • Livin La Liga Prediction: 3-1
Athletic Bilbao v Barcelona (San Mamés - 10pm)
  • Bilbao attack possibly blunted by injury to Llorente. Toquero could be asked to lead the line.
  • Barcelona suffering from swine flu outbreak which rules out Marquez, Toure Yaya and Abidal.
  • Messi, Iniesta and Pedro to lead line in a stadium which normally brings a win for 'Los Cules'.
  • 'Hombre Clave' - Iniesta (Barcelona)
  • Livin La Liga Prediction: 0-1

'El Resumen' - La Liga News 20.11.09

Barcelona striker Zlatan Ibrahimovic has been ruled out of the matches against Athletic Bilbao in the league and Inter Milan in the Champions League. Barca are going to wrap him in cotton wool in the hope that he will be available for the clash against Real Madrid.

Just when it looked like Guti was going to be allowed to rejoin the Real Madrid first-team for the match against Racing, he has gone and injured his thigh which rules him out for a week.

Now that all 32 teams have qualified for the World Cup, it has been calculated that Real Madrid and Chelsea will have the most representatives in South Africa with 16 players from each squad expected to travel. They are closely followed by Liverpool (13) and Barcelona (11).

Real Madrid have been linked with January moves for Diego Perotti of Sevilla and Demichelis of Bayern Munich.

Atletico Madrid President Enrique Cerezo has moved to dismiss reports that they will sell Sergio Agüero to Chelsea in January.

Sevilla rumoured to be after Ajax full-back Emanuelson as a replacement for Barcelona and Real Madrid target Adriano.

Real Zaragoza are among those interested in signing the new Brazilian sensation Carlao after he scored 5 in the first 8 league games for club Uniao Leira.

Sven Goran Eriksson could be making a move to Spain if a consortium of Arab and Swiss businesses (Munto Finance) complete a takeover at second division club Cadiz CF.

AND FINALLY: Barcelona striker Thierry Henry is taking an absolute battering at the moment, even Michael Jackson seems to have risen from below to join in. Here are a couple of the things to have come out of Ireland since that fateful moment in Paris. At least they're not bitter about the whole affair.

France v Ireland: 'Le Hand of God' - Who is to blame?

Short of writing off yesterdays match in favour of a replay, there is absolutely nothing that anyone can say or do that will make Irish players and fans feel any better. Even here in Spain we have the predictable public and media outcry after Thierry Henry handled the ball into his path to allow him to square it to Gallas for the winning goal. Emotions are running high and people want blood, especially those from the Emerald Isle. It was a gut-wrenching experience to see the Ireland team fall to their knees on the Parisian turf at the final whistle. They were cheated out of a chance to go to the World Cup through a penalty shootout, which at the end of the day was the least they deserved. As the witchhunt unfolds across the footballing world, fingers are being jabbed all over the place, but who is really to blame for this mess?

Monsieur Henry? The ex-gunner is getting an absolute pasting from fans and press all over the world. How could he do such a thing? How can anyone ever have any respect for this man again? Ban him from the World Cup! Absolute nonsense. Thierry cheated in the heat of the moment, but he has readily admitted he handled the ball. You cannot condone what he did, nor his overelaborate celebrations after, but had Robbie Keane done the same I am sure the Irish would have taken it: it's the harsh reality of the matter. Besides, what can he do once the goal has been allowed? NOT GUILTY (But poor show Thierry)

The Referee? Martin Hansson must have feared the worst when he tucked himself into bed last night, and you can only imagine the relief when he saw the morning papers full of stories about FIFA and Henry. Not only did the French striker handle the ball but two attacking players were offside when the free kick came in. How could he and his team miss all that? Was it some form of unconscious compensation after denying France a contentious penalty shout moments earlier? The truth is they cocked up big time, and when all is said and done the goal was allowed by him and him only. Of course it was a human error on his part, he's not the devil reincarnated, but in most professions you get the boot if you don't do your job properly. There are reports that the press in his home country Sweden have called for him to be banned from international refereeing, and I have to say I support that recommendation. GUILTY.

FIFA? Michel Platini and his jolly band of FIFA comissioners are looking as clueless and ineffective as ever. The argument over cameras in football has been raging for some time and their abject failure to make a firm decision either way is only serving to fan the flames. I can't really understand the arguments against camera technology, such as those that state cameras would slow the game down; players feign injury and waste time for fun. I even lean slightly towards the notion that football wouldn't be as entertaining without these faux pas. But having an assistant sat next to a screen who can make a decision in a split second and relay any foul play or poor decisions to the ref if requested wouldn't do the game any harm. But arguments aside, if it's a no for cameras, FIFA should say no and close the matter. Otherwise get on and do something about it. And this is before we even start with their farcical decision to seed the playoffs which was a disgraceful attempt to maximise FIFA profits. GUILTY.

There are calls to replay the match from the Irish FA, but as much as I'd like to see it happen, it would open a whole can of worms that probably isn't worth going into and FIFA would never have the nerve to allow it. The controversy will roar on, but when the dust settles it will be France travelling to South Africa and Ireland watching it at home. As people search for a scapegoat, Thierry Henry is an easy target for a media storm caused by inaction from FIFA and a sub-standard ref. Yes, he committed the crime but it is those who let him get away with it who are more culpable.

Spain give it a Viennese Whirl: Austria 1 - 5 Spain

When Spain get the sewing machine out and start threading those patterns they are simply unstoppable. Austria even had the cheek to gatecrash their own party with an early goal through Jantschner in the 7th minute, but that was as good as it got for the hosts as Spain grabbed hold of the ball and refused to give it back. At times the passing was irresistable, with Andrés Iniesta embodying all that is beautiful about the great game. Effortless touch, eagle-eyed vision and the ability to thread a ball through the tightest of holes. An absolute joy to watch.

The Austrian lead lasted all of three minutes. As great teams do, Spain refused to panic in what was a fantastic atmosphere for a friendly. When a defender tripped on the ball just outside his area, David Silva picked it up and slid it through to Cesc, who danced through the backline to wrongfoot the keeper and sidefoot in. Ten minutes later they were ahead, with Iniesta the creator: an inch-perfect angled pass through to Villa who just doesn't miss, firing across Gratzei and into the corner. Austria had no choice but to resort to a physical approach, but things got even harder for the home side after Pehlivan was harshly sent off for a robust yet innocuous challenge on Sergio Busquets.

Just before half-time, Spain worked another fantastic goal which was almost a carbon copy of the second. This time it was Silva who spotted Villa's run and weighted a glorious pass which the Valencia hitman rolled under the goalie. At half-time Del Bosque withdrew Iniesta, Xavi, Villa, Silva and Casillas and introduced Pablo Hernandez, Jesus Navas, Güiza, Negredo and Reina, but it did little to interrupt the Spanish dominance. In the space of a minute 'La Roja' were suddenly 5-1 up, as Fenerbache striker Güiza and Pablo Hernandez upped their World Cup stakes with strikes in the 56th and 57th minute. And although Spain had further chances to increase their lead, the scoreline didn't budge. Spain end 2009 just as they started it: unbeatable. On to 2010......

Spain v Austria and World Cup Playoffs 18.11.09

Tonight sees Spain make a return to the Euro 2008 battleground, where they emerged triumphant winners against the Germans 17 months ago. Austria will welcome 'La Roja' to the Ernst Happel Stadium for an international friendly that will enable the Spanish to relive that glorious summers night in Vienna. A few faces have changed since then, with coach Luis Aragonés having left to be replaced by current incumbent Vicente Del Bosque, but the footballing philosophy remains very much the same.

Barcelona defender Carlos Puyol has muscle problems, so Raul Albiol will take his place in defence. Cesc Fabregas is expected to partner Xavi in midfield, sitting Xabi Alonso on the bench, whilst David Villa will get a chance to taste the Ernst Happel atmosphere he was so cruely denied in 2008. The man who set Spain on the road to glory in that final, Fernando Torres, unfortunately misses out through injury.

For Dietmar Constantini's Austria, this is their moment of glory for 2009 after they failed to make it to the World Cup. Many will predict a hammering for Austria, much like the one they received in Valencia in 1999 when they were beaten 9-0, but they will be keen to avoid a humiliation infront of their home fans. The only danger expected to be posed by the Austrians comes in the shape of Red Bull Salzburg's striker Marc Janko, who has scored 7 in the last 14 outings for his country.

Away from all this international friendliness, there are far more important matches taking place across the world tonight. The final six places are up for grabs in next summer's World Cup, and all the playoffs are still firmly in the balance. First up is Eygpt and Algeria who will play their sudden death playoff in Sudan amidst a security lockdown after trouble erupted last time out in Cairo when the Algeria team bus was attacked by Eygpt fans.

Then the duels in Europe take centre stage, and all eyes will be on France and Portugal who will be expected to take their places in the South African showpiece, but it certainly wont be plain sailing with both Bosnia and Ireland proving first time around that they can more than match their illustrious opponents. Messi to cultivate Maradona perm?

Argentina have bagged the World Cup before it's even started. Why? Because Lionel Messi will cultivate a Maradona perm which will turn him into a devine, unstoppable force that will propel the 'Albiceleste' to the top of world football....just as Diego 'La Pelusa' (which translates as cheeky rascal or ball of fluff, you choose) Maradona did in Mexico 1986. Or at least thats what a group of Argentinians believe, who have created a website to persuade Messi to don the famous barnet in South Africa.

The reason? Aerodynamics of course. They believe that the airflow around those famous curly locks transformed Maradona into a 'cosmic force', aiding his infamous leap towards Peter Shilton and the following wonder goal that ended Englands dream in 1986. Here are their scientifically proven arguments:

Wierd Science: Have no doubts about what made Maradona untouchable in 1986; it was his perm. The curls made the air flow 'stick' around the whole circumference of his head, creating an aerodynamic downforce much like that created by the wings on a Formula 1 car. This aerodynamic force allowed the player to maintain perfect equilibrium and achieve a glue-like adherence to the grass. This explains the jaw-dropping skills which Diego thrilled us with in '86. And what else can explain Columbia's footballing success in the 90's: the scorpion kick by Columbian keeper Higuita and Valderamma's heavenly ability in midfield. (No mention of Keegan?!)

Mythology: Many Argentines have tried to create analogies between that success in '86 and now. The Maradona-Bilardo partnership, the fact that Adidas manufactured both shirts. But the Maradona perm holds even greater weight. If we want to recreate that glorious success of our last World Cup win, we have to go down to the finest details: Messi MUST grow that perm. Can you imagine.....the shirt, the number 10, and those curls reeking havoc in South Africa.....we can.

There is even a testimonial from Maradona's hairdresser, who cut his hair just before he left for Mexico, and who even claims some credit for that wonder goal! It remains to be seen if Messi will take note, or even if it's possible without surgical intervention.....but those loyal followers are convinced that if he does heed their advice, the famous trophy will be theirs!
