Champions League 08.12.09: The Cristiano Show

Olympique Marseilles 1 - 3 Real Madrid

(0-1) 5' Cristiano Ronaldo, (1-1) 11' Lucho, (1-2) 60' Albiol, (1-3) 80' Cristiano Ronaldo
  • You just cannot keep the man out of the headlines. Cristiano Ronaldo helped his team to the top of Group C with a spectacular double against Marseilles. The first was stunning; a 35 yard free-kick that dipped and swerved all over the place. The second was opportunist, but brilliantly executed after picking himself off the floor to sweep in from outside the box.
  • Credit should also go to Marcelo who I thought had a fantastic match on the left, not his accustomed side of the pitch. Real Madrid handled an intimidating Stade Velodrome atmosphere and a physical Marseilles side superbly. Their reward is avoiding the big sides in the next round. Job done.
  • They could even afford to give away a penalty after Albiol had put them 1-2 ahead, as Casillas misjudged a through ball,  but Lucho slammed it against the bar. So Real Madrid march into the knockout stages, and towards a possible final in the Santiago Bernabeu.

Atlético Madrid 0 - 3 Porto

(0-1) 2' Bruno, (0-2) 14' Falcao, (0-3) 75' Hulk
  • There are no secrets to Atlético Madrid. Their defence is hardly worthy of the second division and it needs sorting ASAFP. Their fans must be pulling their hair out, because with the forward line that they have they could go places, but the likely scenario is that they will lose them by next summer to repay their growing debt.
  • The only plus came from Stamford Bridge as Chelsea held Apoel Nicosia to a draw which means Atlético qualify for the Europa League. But in all honesty they won't be expected to go far in that competition playing like this. Quique has a massive job on his hands.
  • If I were an Atlético fan who turned up to the Vicente Calderon, I'd try to see the positives of tonights match. Porto scored three beauties, including a screamer from the delightfully named Hulk. I love that guy.
